Lesson 1: The Core Principle — 'Like Cures Like'

A substance that produces symptoms in a healthy body can cure similar symptoms — how this principle began.

In 1796, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann laid the foundation of this method. Taking cinchona (the bark of the Peruvian tree) himself, he saw that it produced malaria-like fever symptoms in his healthy body. From this came the core principle: 'A substance that can produce certain symptoms in a healthy person's body can cure a condition with similar symptoms' — in Latin, Similia Similibus Curentur.

This theory was fully expressed in the book 'Organon of the Rational Art of Healing' (1810). Six editions of the book were published during Hahnemann's lifetime, and each time he refined the theory.

In this method, the totality of the patient's symptoms matters more than the name of the disease. That is why two patients with the same named disease may receive different medicines — because the type of their symptoms, their sensations, and the pattern of their aggravation and relief are different.

Remember: homeopathy is a complete philosophy of treatment. These lessons are a summary of its classical teaching — not a basis for treatment decisions.
